Pre-Emergent Fertilizing...Most Important Fertilization!

When should you start fertilization?

Typically in Utah you should start fertilization between February and April.  Of course you know that sometimes there may be snow throughout this period of time.  My suggestion is to apply it in April.  Wait for some warmer days and then apply right before an expected rainstorm.
You will want to use a mixture of pre-emergent fertilizer along with a turf building fertilizer.  The pre-emergent fertilizer creates a nice "blanket" over germinating weeds.  It won't catch all of the germinating weeds but will definitely help.  A lot of people wonder why they always have so many weeds in their lawn.  There really are two reasons: 1. They don't fertilize their grass regularly (at least 4 times a year) to build up the health and volume of the grass.  2.  They don't water enough, or correctly.  If you look on Slow-the-Flow's website they give you a lot of good watering tips.  3.  They don't get their lawn aerated yearly.  Lawn aeration is key to breaking thatch layers, helping soften soil so that water and nutrients can actually penetrate deeper into the ground.  This then leads to healthier roots.  4.  Don't cut your lawn so short!  I recommend 3" lawn length to keep a healthy lawn.  Because we live in a desert the high temperatures, keeping a lawn healthy and well watered can be hard.  A great way to offset this problem is longer grass that shades the soil.  This also helps combat weeds as well.
If you work on these 4 things your lawn will definitely start growing fuller, greener, have less weeds, and will actually also require less water!  Good Luck!  I hope this helps.
